Archaic Place Cards
In a recent cathartic moment, my husband and I opened one of the MANY boxes in our basement that have not been opened in…oh a decade. I will be the first to admit that we are serious pack-rats.
Low and behold our eyes soon focused on a serious collection of cassette tapes, including some forgotten, but still treasured “mix tapes” and tapes from a variety of musical groups such as INXS, U2, Beastie Boys, Huey Lewis and the News, Guns & Roses, New Kids on the Block…
What to do with these archaic pieces when one no longer owns something that actually plays them? ? You probably can’t even give them away at this point.
Well, I grooved on the theme of my dinner party — “Friday Night Unplugged” — and I thought PERFECT vehicle for name cards. Here’s the concept: Wrap up each cassette in brown paper (recycled if you’ve got it) and scribble down each guests name in a font remiscent of earlier decades when you believed you were immortal. When guests arrive they see nice little tiny boxes with their names on them. I mean, who doesn’t like a tiny little gift with their dinner? It will be a very fun time figuring out what tape each guest should receive. It will also make for excellent conversation.
Compose your own “mix tape” compilation of tunes from the yesteryears to play while you dine, but play it off your ipod….
And yes, I do have a friend would be happy to receive the New Kids on the Block Tape. For her, we will also have a free walkman 🙂
