Just a little over a week ago, I returned from a rather eclectic vacation, where we toured a variety of coastal towns on the eastern seaboard, including Sag Harbor, New York.
When we arrived in Sag Harbor that morning (now about 12 days ago), I was about 4 days into my vacation. The thought of putting another piece of fried seafood into my body was repulsive and vile. All I wanted was a really fresh piece of grilled fish and a side salad.
I found exactly what I was looking for at “The Dockhouse” right on the wharf (http://www.dockhouseny.com) . My husband and I sat on our stools at the counter and did not speak to each other as we devoured our grilled delicacies. I could feel my whole body saying thank you!
I enjoyed my meal so much that I inquired as to what marinade was used and was told that it at least had ginger, soy sauce and sesame oil. No more information was supplied. But since then I’ve been dying to replicate that lunch that was hands down the best meal I had the entire vacation. Last night I didn’t 100% succeed in this endeavor, but I did come pretty close.
Now, as one of my guests pointed out after having taken a few bites of the grilled swordfish below, you obviously have to start out with a really fresh piece of swordfish. New Wave Seafood in Stamford delivered. As fate would have it, their daily catch was wild swordfish. Not only was it fresh, it was on special – 9.99/lb (a steal!) (also available today for $9.99/lb so get there quick! – http://www.newwaveseafood.com).
I ended up marinating the fish in a combination of sesame oil, soy sauce, fresh ginger, garlic, lemon juice and salt and pepper for about an hour, maybe a little longer. This was not because I intended to marinate it this long, but for whatever reason things were moving a little slower than I would have liked (likely due to the toddler at my feet). I had gotten a pretty thick piece of swordfish, so it was grilled about 4-5 minutes a side. The result was delicious!
Grilled Swordfish – serves 4-6 people
2 lbs fresh swordfish
2 tbsp sesame oil
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp minced fresh ginger
2-3 garlic cloves minced
sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Combine above ingredients in a pan and let marinate for about a hour. Grill 4-5 minutes per side (depends on thickness).

I’ve always been afraid to make swordfish on my own (something intimidating about it…perhaps the sword?). But this recipe looks easy enough that even I might succeed! Can’t wait to try it. Thanks for another great post!
